#Ep 01: The Modern Coach Mission

Welcome! I’m so excited you’re here!

I’m Alisa Kay, a Ukrainian born business coach living in Brighton, UK. When I started in the coaching space, I really didn’t want to call myself a coach. I struggled with that word for a long time. The term felt made up, nobody could really define what a coach did, and it just gave me the “ick.”

In creating this podcast, I want us to have a hub to talk about the shifts happening in our coaching industry. There are so many incredible coaches doing amazing work that are getting lost in the shuffle. There is room for everyone to grow. There’s room for every type of coach to thrive and create the impact that feels best.

Welcome to episode one of the modern coach podcast.

I am so excited to be bringing you this very fast episode of what I hope to be a

very fruitful and long journey together.

Alisa Kay:

So I think the best place to get started is to actually define

Alisa Kay:

what do I actually mean by.

Alisa Kay:

Uh, modern coach, who is this podcast for?

Alisa Kay:

And why are we even having this conversation?

Alisa Kay:

So if we've never met before, hello, welcome one.

Alisa Kay:

Welcome.

Alisa Kay:

All my name is Alisa.

Alisa Kay:

I am a Ukrainian born business coach.

Alisa Kay:

currently based in Brighton, which is a very quaint seaside town in the UK.

Alisa Kay:

And, when I entered the business space, it was now a good, nearly decade, right.

Alisa Kay:

I first had a tutoring agency in London.

Alisa Kay:

I transitioned that business into a copywriting agency.

Alisa Kay:

and then I ended up in this coaching space, and I think one of the things

Alisa Kay:

that Rooney struck me, as I was.

Alisa Kay:

Discovering who I am in this business, wild and really figuring out how can

Alisa Kay:

a, my skillset best help my clients.

Alisa Kay:

The one thing that really struck a chord with me was that I really

Alisa Kay:

didn't want to call myself a coach.

Alisa Kay:

And that feels really blossom of saying this and I'm realizing it, but I really

Alisa Kay:

had a long and deep struggle without word, because first of all, no one could

Alisa Kay:

really explain to me what a coach did.

Alisa Kay:

You know, like what will the skill sets second?

Alisa Kay:

It felt like a whole new industry that just wasn't real.

Alisa Kay:

It was, it sort of felt like made up.

Alisa Kay:

And thirdly, I don't know.

Alisa Kay:

It just, it gave me like the egg when I looked up even like coaching

Alisa Kay:

everywhere, people kept asking me, like, could you coach me?

Alisa Kay:

Could you coach me?

Alisa Kay:

Could you coach?

Alisa Kay:

And, you know, I really struggled with the white for a long time.

Alisa Kay:

And when I started thinking about my relationship with coaching and the

Alisa Kay:

coaching space specifically, I started thinking about, you know, I didn't want

Alisa Kay:

to be like one of those life coaches in the early twenties with the blonde

Alisa Kay:

hair and no shade to blondes out there, I would consider myself blonde too.

Alisa Kay:

But every, you didn't want to be like one of, one of those coaches.

Alisa Kay:

What I mean.

Alisa Kay:

So I started redefining what it meant to be a coach.

Alisa Kay:

And I started thinking about how can we bring a new understanding to this

Alisa Kay:

industry that is in my opinion, having a very bad rep, there are lots of

Alisa Kay:

amazing, great people working in the coaching space and doing really great

Alisa Kay:

work, but just no one knows about them.

Alisa Kay:

And.

Alisa Kay:

You know, wouldn't it be cool if we could figure out a new way forward

Alisa Kay:

a new way of looking at this space?

Alisa Kay:

That is, I think mod by bad press and mud by 101 different Facebook threads.

Alisa Kay:

Right.

Alisa Kay:

As I developed my methodology as I spent time helping hundreds of

Alisa Kay:

coaches as I spend time creating cool sales products, et cetera.

Alisa Kay:

I started thinking about like, what does it actually mean to be a coach?

Alisa Kay:

And, you know, in my opinion, The kosher, someone who facilitates

Alisa Kay:

transformation, it's someone who helps you see things differently.

Alisa Kay:

It is someone who is there to help you move through the hard times in life.

Alisa Kay:

And someone who will help you facilitate a breakthrough that

Alisa Kay:

you wouldn't have otherwise had.

Alisa Kay:

And I think sometimes we as coaches sort of see that as not.

Alisa Kay:

An important aspect of life, right?

Alisa Kay:

That's why a lot of the results that we gift to our clients than not tangible.

Alisa Kay:

Right.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that one of the, one of the biggest myths in our industries,

Alisa Kay:

this, this idea that we're all.

Alisa Kay:

there to just sort of magic over a client and then boom, like that life is better.

Alisa Kay:

But actually I think that a modern coach looks at things slightly differently.

Alisa Kay:

They are the person who understands that, who they are as a person,

Alisa Kay:

their experience that, that POS life as I like to call it and not.

Alisa Kay:

Metaphysical sense in a genuine, like the job that they had before

Alisa Kay:

they started coaching the, you know, the clients that they've helped

Alisa Kay:

before moving on doing other things.

Alisa Kay:

Um, all of that, all of that makes them a coach.

Alisa Kay:

You know, my experience as a tutor, as someone who had multiple servers

Alisa Kay:

based roles in my career makes me.

Alisa Kay:

Better equipped to help my service-based clients develop systems and processes.

Alisa Kay:

It helps me give them that actionable feedback and advice that helps them.

Alisa Kay:

Make more money that helps them have better balance that helps them, you know,

Alisa Kay:

do better in their life and business.

Alisa Kay:

And I think as a coach, that's my job, right?

Alisa Kay:

It's my responsibility to give the roadmap to my clients and help them

Alisa Kay:

see things differently so that they can see that there is another way.

Alisa Kay:

And I think as a modern coach, one of the things that we do best is.

Alisa Kay:

We acknowledge who we were before we started coaching.

Alisa Kay:

We bring that wealth of experience into our offers, into our coaching practice,

Alisa Kay:

into how we show up with our clients.

Alisa Kay:

And instead of shying away from all wealth of experience, we own it and

Alisa Kay:

we take it with us and we make it.

Alisa Kay:

That's actually a selling point rather than something that we're hiding.

Alisa Kay:

Like I have so many clients who were just amazing.

Alisa Kay:

They've been like in the military, they've done incredible things.

Alisa Kay:

They've helped their husbands partners, wives like run businesses

Alisa Kay:

before they've climbed mountains, literally in some senses, right.

Alisa Kay:

They have managed huge teams.

Alisa Kay:

They've done all of this incredible work.

Alisa Kay:

And then.

Alisa Kay:

Talking about it.

Alisa Kay:

And I'm like, are you kidding me?

Alisa Kay:

I've want to hire the integrator who has all of this wealth of experience.

Alisa Kay:

I want to be able to hire a coach who, you know, has direct

Alisa Kay:

experience with this problem.

Alisa Kay:

I want to have the expert who is in fresh out of life coach school, but

Alisa Kay:

is the expert who has that wealth of knowledge that I can see myself in.

Alisa Kay:

And to me being a modern coach means.

Alisa Kay:

Owning your past life.

Alisa Kay:

It means understanding that, you know, asking the same series of 10 questions

Alisa Kay:

of, well, where was the first time that you came up to this problem?

Alisa Kay:

Isn't enough anymore.

Alisa Kay:

You as a coach have to understand that your experience in your life is going to.

Alisa Kay:

Better inform the questions that you're asking.

Alisa Kay:

And of course, like there is a place for those 10 questions,

Alisa Kay:

then we all learn right.

Alisa Kay:

And love.

Alisa Kay:

But in a conversation with a client, I'm not asking the same 10

Alisa Kay:

questions over and over again, I'm leading a conversation differently.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that most modern coaches are doing very similar thing.

Alisa Kay:

So for me, starting this podcast, they really wanted to have a hub

Alisa Kay:

where we could talk about not only the business of coaching, which I

Alisa Kay:

think is such an overlooked area in general, but also, you know, talk

Alisa Kay:

about the shifts that are happening in our industry, you know, as we.

Alisa Kay:

As we most likely all know it's unregulated.

Alisa Kay:

And there is like rampant fuckery going on everywhere in all of

Alisa Kay:

the corners of the internet.

Alisa Kay:

And sometimes it does feel like, you know, all of the bad people of the world

Alisa Kay:

decided to have a meeting and decided that the coaching space is exactly

Alisa Kay:

what they're going to infiltrate next.

Alisa Kay:

But on the other hand, there are so many great, incredible experts who are

Alisa Kay:

doing so much good in the world who are.

Alisa Kay:

Good.

Alisa Kay:

We're at the forefront of leading this new industry that I think is going

Alisa Kay:

to become more and more popular as we progress and is going to become

Alisa Kay:

a little bit, you know, if it hasn't already a lot like therapy, right.

Alisa Kay:

And we have celebrities talking about law of attraction and we have people talking

Alisa Kay:

about coaches and we have people like, you know, the giants like Tony Robbins.

Alisa Kay:

I love him or hate.

Alisa Kay:

You know, who was popularized coaching in the last, I would say five,

Alisa Kay:

years, you know, whereas I didn't really tell my mom what I was doing

Alisa Kay:

when I started my business.

Alisa Kay:

Now, she sort of understands and she knows.

Alisa Kay:

And even when her friends ask her, like, what does your daughter do?

Alisa Kay:

She is.

Alisa Kay:

Actively saying, oh, she's a coach.

Alisa Kay:

And, and people actually understand what that means these days, which I

Alisa Kay:

think is a whole, whole new avenue.

Alisa Kay:

And I wanted to have a hub where we can discuss these things.

Alisa Kay:

And we've talked about not only the business of coaching, not only the

Alisa Kay:

industry as a whole, but also like how can we develop those coaching

Alisa Kay:

skills and have a place for that.

Alisa Kay:

So I'm excited to be bringing this to you and I'm excited to be sharing my.

Alisa Kay:

Thoughts and theories and experiences and case studies and knowledge

Alisa Kay:

around this coaching space.

Alisa Kay:

Because as much as I, you know, love the five huge coaches of the day.

Alisa Kay:

I do think that there is room for everyone to grow.

Alisa Kay:

There is room for every type of coach, whether it's business, you

Alisa Kay:

know, life mindset, something else that we haven't even discovered yet.

Alisa Kay:

I think that there is such a wealth of opportunity in this space.

Alisa Kay:

for everyone to rise up.

Alisa Kay:

I work primarily with women, so I want every single woman to be able to find,

Alisa Kay:

you know, the coach for HUD, that that will help her seek potential.

Alisa Kay:

I want it to be like going to the gym and having a personal trainer.

Alisa Kay:

Like I want everyone to have a coach because coaching has been the number

Alisa Kay:

one thing that has really moved my life forward that has really.

Alisa Kay:

Helped me have the best results.

Alisa Kay:

So I want the same thing for everyone.

Alisa Kay:

If this girl from, you know, the middle of Ukraine from the middle of nowhere

Alisa Kay:

can shed years of generational trauma can move mountains, travel the world and

Alisa Kay:

do really cool things with her time and her expertise, then anyone can write.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that coach.

Alisa Kay:

Has been a huge part of, of that.

Alisa Kay:

So, you know, I think when you understand that being a modern coach is bridging

Alisa Kay:

that gap between who you once were and who you have the potential to be.

Alisa Kay:

And you'll sit somewhere in the middle of those two things.

Alisa Kay:

It means that you are able to not only book those ideal soulmate client.

Alisa Kay:

No only, you know, have the relationship that you've always wanted with your

Alisa Kay:

partner, husband, wife, et cetera.

Alisa Kay:

Not only are you able to show up differently with your family

Alisa Kay:

because you'll have more energy, more, more life, more zesting.

Alisa Kay:

But also you can do things that affect your community.

Alisa Kay:

You know, for, for so many years, I kept saying, I just want to have impact.

Alisa Kay:

I want to have impact.

Alisa Kay:

I want to have impact, but I never really defined what that means.

Alisa Kay:

I never really told myself like, well, what does it look like to have impact?

Alisa Kay:

Is it enough to impact one person on Facebook today or isn't know.

Alisa Kay:

What does it actually look like in terms of, of mission?

Alisa Kay:

And I think the modern coach is really solid in what is the

Alisa Kay:

mission of her, of her business?

Alisa Kay:

Who is she trying to help?

Alisa Kay:

Who is she trying to impact?

Alisa Kay:

How many people does that?

Alisa Kay:

And she's a lot more specific in those definitions than I think a

Alisa Kay:

regular, run of the mill person is.

Alisa Kay:

and I think.

Alisa Kay:

Being, you know, a coach in this modern world means that you understand that

Alisa Kay:

it's not enough to just be offline.

Alisa Kay:

It's not enough to go to networking events.

Alisa Kay:

It's not enough to, only go to conferences.

Alisa Kay:

It's not enough to hand out leaflets being a modern coach means.

Alisa Kay:

Doing modern marketing.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that's something that people just don't really talk about.

Alisa Kay:

Like what does it actually take to be a booked out, fully happy

Alisa Kay:

thriving person in this world?

Alisa Kay:

Well, it requires effort, time and energy, and it requires you understanding

Alisa Kay:

how to position yourself online.

Alisa Kay:

And most people just don't know how to do.

Alisa Kay:

Most people think, well, I am a great coach and people should just know they

Alisa Kay:

should be able to pinpoint that I am the person that's going to help them best.

Alisa Kay:

They should just all be coming to me.

Alisa Kay:

And the reality of the modern world is, is that that's not the case.

Alisa Kay:

Best at coaching, but the worst that marketing yourself and in my experience,

Alisa Kay:

the best coaches are those that don't know how to talk about the fact that they're

Alisa Kay:

a great coach and that is just sad.

Alisa Kay:

And I want to make sure that we, we change the world so that those people are the

Alisa Kay:

ones that are getting to help the majority of the people that need them, you know?

Alisa Kay:

And I think a big part of that is, you know, when we get into messaging.

Alisa Kay:

So in a, in a, in my past life, I used to be a copywriter.

Alisa Kay:

I used to create funnels for people for different types of coaches

Alisa Kay:

from fibromyalgia to, I think we worked with a, fitness priest once.

Alisa Kay:

That was fun.

Alisa Kay:

That was a fun little niche.

Alisa Kay:

To just life coaching to a psychic medium, like all sorts of different.

Alisa Kay:

And the one thing that really struck me when I was doing that type of

Alisa Kay:

work was that no one really knew that messaging, no one could tell

Alisa Kay:

me like who they're helping and why.

Alisa Kay:

Right.

Alisa Kay:

And I think it goes back to that niching, nightmare that most coaches

Alisa Kay:

that ran with, they're like, well, I just still don't know who I'm

Alisa Kay:

helping and why I'm helping them.

Alisa Kay:

And it goes back to every time we're about to learn something with a client.

Alisa Kay:

It goes back to the niche question.

Alisa Kay:

It's like fundamental coaching.

Alisa Kay:

One-on-one.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that, you know, the, the shifting of the perspective

Alisa Kay:

is the modern coach knows that her niche is going to shift.

Alisa Kay:

She knows that it's going to, it's not going to be the same thing forever and

Alisa Kay:

ever, and she doesn't need it to be.

Alisa Kay:

It's okay for you to evolve.

Alisa Kay:

It's okay for you to not know the exact ideal client that you're

Alisa Kay:

going to help in the next two years.

Alisa Kay:

I want you to focus on who is the person that would benefit

Alisa Kay:

me right this very second.

Alisa Kay:

And how can I impact that person today instead of trying to map out this

Alisa Kay:

vision for the next 10 years, can we think about, okay, well, what are the

Alisa Kay:

skills that I have today that I can offer the people that need me the most.

Alisa Kay:

And can I just be okay with figuring out as I go along, I couldn't

Alisa Kay:

have told you five years ago, even 10 years ago that this is the

Alisa Kay:

podcast that I would be recording.

Alisa Kay:

Like it was just, it wasn't even in my remit of possibility, this is the

Alisa Kay:

topic that we would be discussing.

Alisa Kay:

But it is, and feels like my soul's work and maybe in the next few years

Alisa Kay:

it will evolve and I'm okay with that.

Alisa Kay:

I don't need to have, you know, the perfect vision

Alisa Kay:

for the next five, 10 years.

Alisa Kay:

What I need to do though, is impact the people that need me.

Alisa Kay:

What I need to do is show up to the people.

Alisa Kay:

That are listening and that are interested in what I have to say today.

Alisa Kay:

And it's okay for my messaging to evolve.

Alisa Kay:

And it's okay for your messaging to evolve too.

Alisa Kay:

And I think in this coaching space, we don't really talk enough about that,

Alisa Kay:

that people are going to have evolutions.

Alisa Kay:

You're not supposed to sit still in one place and that's okay.

Alisa Kay:

No one is expecting you to have it all figured out and no

Alisa Kay:

one is expecting you to have.

Alisa Kay:

You'll find, you know, your vision tomorrow.

Alisa Kay:

It's okay for it to be vague.

Alisa Kay:

It's okay for you to figure it out as you go along.

Alisa Kay:

And I think, you know, the final point that I want to make today

Alisa Kay:

is, is this, is that being a modern coach in this sea of saturation?

Alisa Kay:

Right?

Alisa Kay:

Sometimes it feels like there are so many people.

Alisa Kay:

We're trying to do what you, want to do.

Alisa Kay:

They want to just help people.

Alisa Kay:

They want to book clients.

Alisa Kay:

They want to have a comfortable, happy life.

Alisa Kay:

I think being a modern coach in, in many respects means that you don't have

Alisa Kay:

to have a 20 gazillion dollar vision.

Alisa Kay:

That doesn't have to be what you it's okay.

Alisa Kay:

If it is but it doesn't have to be your reality.

Alisa Kay:

You can have the type of life that you want to have if you want to just

Alisa Kay:

help 10 people every 90 days, or if you want to help 10 people a year.

Alisa Kay:

That's okay.

Alisa Kay:

No one wants you to be the next Marie Forleo.

Alisa Kay:

If that's not what you want to be.

Alisa Kay:

And I think we look at these, you know, coaching giants.

Alisa Kay:

If we look at, you know, I've been to UPW a few times, in my life.

Alisa Kay:

And it's okay if you want to be on stage like Tony roaring of the crowd

Alisa Kay:

and having, you know, that level of, of, I would say fame was what I

Alisa Kay:

would call it, but it's also okay.

Alisa Kay:

If you just want to have a practice, helping people that helps you cover your

Alisa Kay:

bills and helps you bring a secondary income into your life, it doesn't

Alisa Kay:

have to be this big, huge vision.

Alisa Kay:

And I want you to remember.

Alisa Kay:

Just because other people are, you know, bragging about the six-figure launches,

Alisa Kay:

yada yada yada 87% of business owners fail 87% of business owners close up

Alisa Kay:

shop and they, and they give up and that doesn't have to be your legacy.

Alisa Kay:

And I think the reason that 87% of people decide to close up the businesses

Alisa Kay:

and, and, and essentially stop what they're doing is because they're kidding

Alisa Kay:

themselves as to what they actually want.

Alisa Kay:

Lots of coaches just want to coach.

Alisa Kay:

And that is okay.

Alisa Kay:

You don't have to create a 20 product suite, right?

Alisa Kay:

You don't have to create a complex funnel.

Alisa Kay:

You don't have to do all of the things that the online

Alisa Kay:

gurus are telling you to do.

Alisa Kay:

If all you want to do is coach people into the next best version of themselves.

Alisa Kay:

It's not a requirement for you to be successful, to have a huge multi gazillion

Alisa Kay:

dollar business with 20 team members.

Alisa Kay:

And I wish that someone had said that to me, when I first started that, like, it's

Alisa Kay:

good for you to be ambitious and is great for you to have this vision, but also if

Alisa Kay:

you don't want to have a 20 person team, and if you don't want to own buildings,

Alisa Kay:

and if you don't want to have an office, and if you don't want to, you know, have.

Alisa Kay:

50 funnels running at one time.

Alisa Kay:

That's not a requirement for your success is not a requirement for you to be happy

Alisa Kay:

and healthy and have a balanced life.

Alisa Kay:

Because when I was overwhelmed and burnt out and just wanting a

Alisa Kay:

different level of freedom, but I still wanted to help people.

Alisa Kay:

Right.

Alisa Kay:

I convinced myself that I had to make it more complicated.

Alisa Kay:

I had to make it, you know, means something.

Alisa Kay:

And it was like hard work was a requirement.

Alisa Kay:

Right.

Alisa Kay:

I had to hustle in order for it to mean something.

Alisa Kay:

And I want you to know that you having a handful of calls every week.

Alisa Kay:

And helping those people that need your help in this very moment is

Alisa Kay:

enough for you to be successful.

Alisa Kay:

It's enough for you to be bringing in the money that you want to bring in.

Alisa Kay:

And I, and I wish that someone had said that to me.

Alisa Kay:

And I think, you know, as we go into what it means to be a modern coach,

Alisa Kay:

it's okay for you to just want to coach, like so many people convince

Alisa Kay:

you, otherwise they convince you have to have a product and you have

Alisa Kay:

to have this and you have to have.

Alisa Kay:

if you don't want that, then it's okay.

Alisa Kay:

If you don't then of course, like let's, let's go, like let's, let's create

Alisa Kay:

the coolest, let's create the launch.

Alisa Kay:

Let's let's do all the things, but if it's not something that

Alisa Kay:

you desire, then it's okay.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that so many of us convince ourselves that we want something

Alisa Kay:

because someone else has said that because we have watched a great webinar

Alisa Kay:

because we've done this or that on the.

Alisa Kay:

And I want you to know that that's not a requirement for your success.

Alisa Kay:

You can coach the people that you want to coach, and that can be.

Alisa Kay:

You can also launch 50 products and have $55 and have a big office

Alisa Kay:

and have a gazillion dollar vision.

Alisa Kay:

And that's also good and, and great and perfect for you.

Alisa Kay:

If that's where you see yourself, ultimately, you as a modern coach

Alisa Kay:

decide who you are, you decide what you want, you decide what that vision is

Alisa Kay:

for you, and then you act accordingly.

Alisa Kay:

And I think that lots of us don't want to decide for that looks

Alisa Kay:

like, and I'm here to tell you.

Alisa Kay:

It's okay.

Alisa Kay:

You can make a decision today and then decide otherwise tomorrow.

Alisa Kay:

And I think the biggest part of you choosing to be who you want to be is

Alisa Kay:

you deciding that it's okay for it to be unclear and it's okay for it to

Alisa Kay:

not be, you know, fully mapped out.

Alisa Kay:

But you knowing your key metrics, you knowing, what, what are the things that

Alisa Kay:

you need to measure in order to get.

Alisa Kay:

To the level of success that you want.

Alisa Kay:

And what does it look like for you to be successful?

Alisa Kay:

Right?

Alisa Kay:

Because only, you know, that maybe to you, it means covering your bills maybe to you.

Alisa Kay:

It means having a surplus of X amount in your bank account, maybe

Alisa Kay:

to you, it does mean having that big.

Alisa Kay:

Whatever it is to you.

Alisa Kay:

That's good enough, right?

Alisa Kay:

That is perfectly fine to have your own vision and being a modern coach

Alisa Kay:

to me means owning that vision and knowing that just because your best

Alisa Kay:

friend, Suzy wants to have FFT person, coach team does not mean that you

Alisa Kay:

need to do that to be successful and ultimately I think you get to choose to

Alisa Kay:

be whoever it is that you want to be.

Alisa Kay:

And the most freeing thing about being a modern coach is that everything is.

Alisa Kay:

Working out in your favor, everything is working for you

Alisa Kay:

when everything is available.

Alisa Kay:

Like every single reality that you could possibly want, whether it's having a

Alisa Kay:

six-figure funnel, whether it's having a team, whether it's having an office

Alisa Kay:

or whether it's just having more time to spend with your kids, all of that

Alisa Kay:

is in the remit of your possibility.

Alisa Kay:

Should you choose to take it?

Alisa Kay:

So.

Alisa Kay:
